The Chalta tree is a deciduous plant which produces light yellow or white flowers in the summer and it produces sour tasting fruits. The fruit of the apple tree is round, pinkish red in color and slightly flattened at the ends.

It is a large shrub or small tree, typically growing to 5 meters in height. It has reddish-brown bark that thickens with age. The leaves are glossy bright green above and paler below, 2–6 cm broad and serrated on the edges.

Elephant apple plant is a native plant of India and grows in abundance. The fruit is extremely sour, hence the name ‘elephant apple’. It is believed to have medicinal properties.
